Galerie Number 8 x Farago Projects present LES NOUVEAUX ROMANTIQUES

A photography group show celebrating of diverse love & beauty.

Bringing together a selection of works from emerging photographers and image makers from across the globe, « Les Nouveaux Romantiques » reflects on the multifaceted ways that we show our love. The exhibition, organized in collaboration between The Farago Projects and Galerie Number 8 and curated by its founder Marie Gomis-Tresize, will run from November 4 to 14 at 3537, the new multi-faceted cultural venue curated by Dover Street Market.

Rich in feeling and designed to provoke your emotions, this exhibition has been curated in response to the human need for connection and touch.

Our selected artists react to the theme in radically differing ways, some reflecting on the physical aspect of tenderness, which we were deprived of during the pandemic and its accompanying isolation.

While others examine how bubbling oneself and social distancing can be an act of kindness, whether it’s motivated by self-love or thinking of the wellbeing of others, and reflects on the idea of caring from afar. Aiming to break all clichés and highlight the beauty that we can create once we all come together.

About the curator:

Whether nurturing new musicians or launching the career of a promising visual artist, Marie Gomis-Trezise is best described as a serial scout of the best and brightest talent around. The groundbreaking creative director first made waves in the music industry as France’s first Black A&R in a major company. In developing her artists’ sound and image she fell in love with photography – that was the acorn from which GALERIE NUMBER 8 grew.

Bringing together a new wave of photographers, predominantly from the African diaspora and global south, GALERIE NUMBER 8 champions artists with an unflinching gaze – those creatives whose work seeks to dismantle cultural barriers and sexual constructs. Since its launch in 2016, the gallery’s impact on popular culture has been immeasurable. It was one of the first space to exhibit the now-acclaimed photographer Campbell Addy, Justin French’s work with Ib Kamara and she has represented highly sought after names including David Uzochukwu, Djeneba Aduayom and Mous Lamrabat. The Brussels-based online gallery has also made a name for itself presenting innovative exhibitions across the globe, with shows at AKAA art fair, Unseen, Les Rencontres D’Arles, Dak’art Off Biennale and 1-54 London to mention just a few.

Marie’s impact can be felt further afield through her creative directorship at Nataal, the global media brand spotlighting contemporary African fashion, music art and culture.

About Galerie Gomis

Born into a Senegalese family in the northern districts of Marseille, Marie Gomis-Trezise established Galerie Number 8 in 2016.

The groundbreaking creative director, as France’s first Black A&R in a major record company, discovered her love for photography while shaping her artists’ sound and image. This discovery served as the foundation for her vision to bring visibility to a new wave of photographers from the African diaspora and the global South.

Galerie Number 8 has now run its course, and it is time for a new chapter. With a physical manifestation in the heart of Brussels, the gallery will be renamed Galerie Gomis, after its founder.

This change reflects Marie’s personal commitment and acknowledges that in the passage of time, human beings evolve. The choice of the color purple is a subtle allusion to the rain of the same name, symbolizing the hidden aspects of our identities.

It underscores the belief that our individuality transcends labels such as race, sexual orientation, or socio-economic background. What truly matters is embracing our differences, as they represent the most profound diaspora in the history of humanity.
